Worm Moon Journaling & Ritual

Worm Moon Journaling & Ritual

The March Full Moon—this year on March 14—is traditionally called the Worm Moon. While the name might sound unusual, it symbolizes the earth warming up, bringing worms closer to the surface and signaling the awakening of nature.

This moon carries the energy of awakening, renewal, and transformation, making it the perfect time for new beginnings. For me, this is the perfect time to reflect in my journal on new opportunities—both metaphorically and literally—considering which seeds I want to plant to achieve the harvest I desire in the coming months.

Historical and Natural Background of the Worm Moon

The Worm Moon marks a powerful shift in the seasons. It signals the end of winter and the awakening of nature, making it a time of renewal, fertility, and transformation.

As the ground begins to warm, the frozen soil starts to soften and thaw. This allows earthworms to rise closer to the surface, enriching the soil and supporting plant life. In turn, birds such as robins return, feeding on the newly emerged worms—another clear symbol of the season shifting to spring.

Journaling with the Worm Moon

Journaling can deepen self-awareness and encourage a stronger connection with yourself. Here are some journal prompts to get started:

  • What things do I want to grow and flourish in the coming months?
  • What transformations am I currently experiencing?
  • What parts of my life need change?
  • What am I ready to release and leave behind with winter?
  • What new beginnings do I want to embrace this spring?

Ritual: Garden of Intentions Under the Worm Moon

This ritual helps you align your personal intentions with the fertile and transformative energy of the Worm Moon.

Materials needed:

  • Flowerpots or a small garden bed
  • Seeds that symbolize your intentions (e.g., sunflower for joy, basil for prosperity)
  • Potting soil
  • Small pieces of paper and a pen
  • A candle (optional, for meditation)

Steps:

  1. Cleanse your space and arrange your materials.
  2. Set your intentions: Reflect on what you wish to manifest.
  3. Write each intention on a small piece of paper and place it into the soil next to the corresponding seed.
  4. As you gently cover them with earth, visualize your desires taking root and growing.
  5. If you feel called to, light a candle and meditate on your intentions.
  6. Close the ritual by watering the seeds, symbolizing nourishment for your dreams.

Keep tending to your plants as a reminder of your growing intentions.
